THE ART OF FOCUS | WORKING FROM HOME

As everyone all over the world continues to self-isolate, lets talk focus, and specifically how you can do this at home. The likelihood is that you’re now surrounded by more distractions than ever, perhaps it’s your family, the laundry, the refrigerator, your cuticles, or the fact that you can’t remember the last time you watered the house plants.

Losing focus can take seconds, however gaining it back takes a lot longer than you might think.

So, how can we action exceptional focus at home? Watch the full video below:

For more informative videos like this, visit Victory TV

Gloria Mark, a professor in the Department of Informatics at the University of California, has proven that it takes 23 minutes and 15 seconds just to re-focus after losing it.

Who knew that quick scroll of your Instagram feed could carry such dire consequences to your productivity?

So here are a few tips on how you can execute exceptional focus at home…

PROBLEM NUMBER 1: The setup – separate your personal from your professional

Lastly set some boundaries with yourself, your family or your room mates. Let them know well in advance your working hours, and your hours for socializing.

Next, dress the part. Even though you’re at home it can be beneficial to get ready for work in the same way you would if you were going into the office.

Set up a dedicated home office with all the things you require to work efficiently.

PROBLEM NUMBER 2: Indecisiveness

Your quality of focus is more about what you DON’T do as opposed to what you do do? Saying a big fat decisive YES to saying NO will allow you the freedom to focus on what really matters. In fact, Warren Buffet has a wonderful method in determining exactly what to say NO to so you’re able to say yes to what’s most important.

THE WARREN BUFFET 2 LIST METHOD:

So simple and yet so powerful. This method is wonderful in helping you determine what deserves your focus and what doesn’t in your career. It’s also a method you can use to determine bigger life goals as well as determine what needs your attention in any given week, a habit that could easily be adopted on a Sunday evening or Monday morning.

So, first things first, take out your pen and paper and write down your top 25 goals, once again either for career, life or for the next working week.

Once you’ve written down your 25 goals circle your top five, the most important goals you really want to accomplish.

Now you have two lists, your Top 5 list of the most important goals, and a second list of 20 other goals. An A list and a B.

Now comes the point where one must, as Faulkner once said, kill your darlings.

“Everything you didn’t circle just became your avoid-at-all-cost list. No matter what, these things get no attention from you until you’ve succeeded with your top 5.”

Consider this your introverts guide to networking.

As an introvert networking and small talk don’t come easy, and often the idea of walking into a room full of strangers is enough to bring on a panic attack.

But networking is a crucial part of any job. Learning how to network as an introvert could be what makes or breaks your opportunity to advance in your career.

So today I want to cover 3 ways you can master the ability to network, even when anxiety is high and you would rather be anywhere else than in a crowded room full of nametagged strangers.

For more advice on how to overcome your fears in the face of a networking event view the full episode below or on our YouTube Channel Victory TV. Otherwise, keep reading the truncated version below.

1. Be yourself!

I know, it sounds cliché, but it’s true! Networking has gotten a bad rap, but at its core, networking is merely relationship building, it’s not schmoozing, it’s communicating. And it’s important to understand the strengths of your communication style – for example, introverts are usually better at creating intimate one on one relationships and are generally better listeners, two important social superpowers!

2. Do your research!

First ask yourself: What is the point of this networking event? And Why am I here? Figure out your specific goals for attending. Next, ask yourself: Who is it being hosted by and who will be in attendance? Then look them up on LinkedIn, find out what industries they’re in and develop a short but concise list of people you want to talk to.

3. Put on your listening ears!

Once you’ve prepared a list of roughly 10 questions, some of my favourites being:

How did you hear about this event?

What do you do?

How long have you been in your current position?

Are you working on any interesting projects?

Do you have a side hustle outside of work?

Remember that people like talking about themselves, and new research from Harvard suggests that asking more questions – and asking more follow-up questions – increases your likability.

In a working life full of networking events, meetings and conferences, of all the transformational skills you can acquire to succeed in business, public speaking is high on the list, and yet it’s a skill that is often overlooked or ignored.

This is why we asked Victory Offices member and expert on public speaking, Carmen Sederino from Illuminated Story, to sit down with us to talk about how YOU can double your value by becoming a great public speaker.

Carmen shares incredible insight into why public speaking is so beneficial, as well as tactics you can implement to improve immediately.

If you’d like to see the full interview you can view it below or on our YouTube Channel Victory TV, otherwise keep reading the truncated version of our discussion for her expert advice.

Can public Speaking improve your business or career?

The more successful you become the more people expect you to be confident and comfortable speaking publicly. Whether you’re pitching to clients, negotiating with a supplier, or leading your people.

It seems like one of the biggest concerns people have in conjunction with public speaking is nerves, which I can personally understand, do you have any techniques that you use to manage fear?

  • PREPARE.

When you look up fear in the dictionary one of the meanings is: you don’t feel prepared. This is where I tell you to practice. Practice out loud or you’ll scare yourself with your voice.

  • POWER POSE.

If you can change your physiology you can change the way you feel about something. The way you feel is very important.

  • LISTEN & RESPOND.

Remember to be in the moment and engage with your audience.

The content of a speech is a small component of effective communication, it’s also important to master your tone, delivery and how you show up physically. What’s your advice on how to master your tone and presentation?

Our communication is received in three different ways, visual, vocal, and verbal

  • 55% Visual – Our physiology and body language.
  • 38% Vocal – Tone.
  • 7% Verbal – What we say.

This doesn’t mean what we say isn’t important it means that if your visual, vocal, and verbal aren’t congruent with your message then people will be looking at what you’re doing not listening to what you’re saying.

Do you have any last words of wisdom for our readers?

Warren Buffet, one of the most successful businessmen in America, is always asked ‘what’s the secret formula to being great in business?’ and his answer is surprising, he says ‘become a great public speaker’. You can increase your value by 50% over time by becoming a great public speaker.

My advice would be to remember that you aren’t born a great public speaker, you can be trained, it’s a skill that can be learned, so invest, invest in a coach, or invest time in becoming a great public speaker.

If you have questions, comments or thoughts about how to master public speaking include them in the comments below, that’s where the most important conversations happen, and where you can begin to find your community!

Otherwise, get in touch with Carmen, and invest in becoming the best version of yourself!
